ReStory is a specialist, not-for-profit, embryonic news site that covers the practices, projects, research findings and policies with the potential to offer scalable pathways to social and ecological restoration.
ReStory reports on under-publicised, potentially transformative developments, which align with the scientific understanding of the limits to society’s material and energy use and of humanity’s impacts on Earth system thresholds. This means we take seriously concepts such as post-growth economics, energy use reduction, justice within earth system boundaries, alternative ownership structures, localisation, and ecologically-grounded agriculture and land use.
Our sources include academia and other research communities; the permaculture and regenerative farming movements; organisations exploring solidarity economies; movements working for social and environmental justice; bodies piloting cooperative, post-growth communities, and many others.
ReStory aims wherever possible to explicitly identify and acknowledge the barriers to progressive action, as well as the struggles of some of those on the front-lines of change.
Its mission is two-fold: to expand our awareness of developments with the potential to contribute to equitable, ecologically-regenerative, healing human cultures; and to demonstrate the power of news framing to shed light on power structures that prevent or support positive change.
The intended audience for ReStory is the interested, curious public, especially those frustrated with the confounding and counterproductive nature of the dominant media. It is also targeted at those who are ready and well-positioned to update their message to their own audiences, for example policy experts, educators, the media, NGOs, and think-tanks.
ReStory is also planning to undertake media advocacy, providing other channels with ideas, resources and expert contacts to help them reframe and enhance their own editorial output.
ReStory’s vision is that it becomes known and respected for its grounded, confident, journalistic approach to countering unhelpful assumptions about society in the context of the accelerating Earth system crisis, while aggregating stories of promise into an overall narrative twist for humanity.
